SPEAKER
Karen M. Stanley, MS, RN, PMHCNS-BC is an independent consultant and a research instructor at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), College of Nursing.
- Karen received her BS degree in nursing from The Johns Hopkins University and her MS degree in nursing administration from the University of Maryland. She did post graduate work at the University of Maryland in psychiatric nursing and has been certified as an Adult Psychiatric/ Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist for 20 years. Her work experience includes twenty-three years as a Psychiatric Consultation Liaison Nurse (PCLN), five years as a psychiatric nurse manager, and several years as a staff nurse in psychiatry and oncology.
- In her work as a PCLN, Karen served as a consultant to staff caring for patients in the acute care setting at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, The Johns Hopkins Geriatric Center, and the MUSC Medical Center. Her role also included serving as a consultant to nursing staff groups and providing didactic and experiential learning sessions on topics such as team building, conflict management, and stress management.
- In 2004, Karen introduced the topic of lateral violence in nursing at MUSC. She developed and tested a survey instrument in collaboration with three MUSC College of Nursing faculty members. This survey questionnaire was designed to measure the perceived incidence and severity of lateral violence in the nursing workforce, and in 2007an article was published describing the pilot study. Karen has authored and co-authored seven published articles on the topic of lateral violence in nursing.
